Bilateral elongated coronoid processes of mandible

Puja CHAUHAN, Shilpi Gupta DIXIT

Bones of the skull constitute a very important part of study in anatomy for functional correlations. While selecting mandible for routine demonstrations in osteology section, a mandible with abnormally long coronoid process on both sides was found. It was a male mandible of geriatric age group. The length of coronoid processes was 2.4 cm on the right and 2.6 cm on the left side. The entity was perhaps coronoid process hyperplasia due to bilateral elongation of the coronoid processes made of histologically normal bone. Bilateral hyperplasia of the coronoid process is infrequent and may present with mechanical problem of limited opening of mouth but thorough clinical and radiological examination can help to rationalize the line of management and the ultimate clinical outcome.
